Academics 1

Elementary School

Tremendous growth and excitement about learning characterize the elementary years. Students grow in academic skills, social understanding, biblical knowledge, and independence in studies.

The Kindergarten through second-grade program focuses on growing the foundational pieces of learning with the goal of achieving proficiency in reading and math by the end of second grade. Third through fifth grade take all that they have learned and are taught how to think critically and conceptually both in subject matter and of the world around them. The teachers employ individualized, small-group, and large-group instruction in order to meet individual needs and ensure mastery of the content and skills.
Teachers use several tools to monitor progress and growth throughout the year as we align with Pennsylvania and National standards. Students complete assessments through IXL, Acadience Learning, and NWEA MAPS Growth.

Students enjoy a deep and innovative academic program that illuminates God’s world which includes Bible, a student-based reading program, spelling, creative writing, social studies, and science. Our core math curriculum for grades K-8 is Into Math, which helps students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and builds problem-solving skills. Reflex Math is used in grades 2-8 to individualize mastery of facts. The elementary program is enriched with music, art, Spanish, STEM lab, technology, chapel, and physical education. Opportunities for extra support are available through Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit for students who meet the criteria. Additionally, the students are involved in other activities to enhance their classroom experience.

Critical thinking skills that examine academics and life experiences from a biblical perspective are infused throughout the program. All subjects illuminate biblical truth and challenge students to use their God-given abilities to glorify Him and see the world as He would desire.

Elementary teachers are highly qualified and participate regularly in professional development opportunities. They embrace a biblical model for instruction and discipline as they instruct and equip students.

Academics 2

Middle School

Middle School is both a rewarding and challenging period when students are learning to explore who they are. Middle School teachers walk alongside students to help answer this question within a biblical framework. Students are challenged to answer the question “Who am I?” in the context of who God created them to be. Teachers utilize MindPrint Learning to assess students’ learning strengths throughout the school year. Core subjects include Bible, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Also offered are Art, Computer, Introduction to World Cultures, Health, and Physical Education. Scriptural principles and values are integrated throughout the curriculum and in classroom discussions. Classes are semi-departmentalized and students change classes to meet teachers who specialize in their subject areas.

In addition to core classes and specials, students participate in Exploratory Studies once weekly to begin to discover their own unique interests and discover how to use their God given talents beyond the classroom walls. These classes occur both on and off campus; providing students a time to strengthen friendships while learning a tangible skill. Courses offered in the past have included health and wellness, robotics, sign language, entrepreneurship, photography, and drama; each taught by experts in their field. These offerings change on a regular basis to provide a wide range of subject matter as well as to meet the needs of our student population. The introduction of career exploration at the middle school level assists students on their path towards high school readiness.

Middle School students experience weekly Chapel. They also have the opportunity to participate in praise and worship team. Each year a theme is selected and woven throughout each classroom. Salem’s goal is ultimately to provide a rigorous academic program with opportunities for emotional, social, and spiritual development. We aim to cultivate not only intellectual growth but also character development, encouraging students to become compassionate leaders and active contributors to society.
